Okay, maybe that’s twisting the statistics a little. But these figures in the Guardian go some way to showing just how important the design of wine is to the wine-buying public.
Women choose and buy eight out of every 10 bottles of wine that are drunk at home, according to figures out today. […] When it comes to choosing wines, women said they were driven mainly by price (74%), followed by the type of grape (64%), the country of origin (55%) and more superficial trappings such as the label (42%).
Superficial trappings are the lifeblood of Grogger, so hurrah for those women! That’s right, you choose the pretty one, love.

We’re not sure if these designs by Moruba have actually been produced, but we love the simplicity of them. Seen via Swiss Miss where someone has commented that they look similar to these designs for Mondavi wines by Dave Warner based on musical notations…

Decanter, April 2009
It is with great pleasure that we can ‘out’ our first celebrity as a Grogger, and we’re talking an A-lister here: the grandfather of fine wine journalism himself, Micheal Broadbent MW. Writing in his regular column in the April 2009 edition of Decanter magazine, self-confessed binger Mr. Broadbent opines on the branding of Château Haut Gay 2006:
“Perfectly decent wine, but hideous name and label in a colour I can only descibe as like the hide of a South-African elephant after wallowing in mud, with equally dreary lettering.”
Now while Michael’s conjecture that the sub-£8 Bordeaux ‘might well appeal to a certain segment of society’ is unclear – does he mean cheapskates or homonym-loving homosexuals? – it’s jolly to think that ‘cottage claret’ was an intentional double-entendre.

In the near future we will have to do a full profile of Adelaide-based agency MASH and their seemingly inexhaustible list of brave and forward-thinking winemaker clients. But, for the time-being, here is their understated Rorschach-inky-butterfly designs for Inkwell wines. Nice floorboards too.

Although the French would rather put the name of the village donkey on the label rather than the grape variety, and the German method of categorising wine results in literary convolutions like “trockenbeerenauslese”, surely the Italians take the award for most opaque, illogical and beaurocratic system of wine naming and labelling. With little attempt to demystify their unfamiliar native grape varieties and huge differences in quality from the same region, we Groggers very rarely explore beyond Chianti and/or the second-to-cheapest one on the Pizza Express menu.

We Groggers are a romantic breed and look forward to the day when we can raise a glass of bubbly to toast our blushing bride. Although our choice of dream woman is varied (Kirsty Allsop, Lauren Laverne and Felicity Kendal circa-1975 to name a few), we all concur in our choice of fizz for the top table – Perrier-Jouët’s vintage beauty, Belle Epoque.

Based in London, branding agency Stranger & Stranger have an enviable client list of international wine and spirit brands, including Grogger favourite Clos de los Siete. Their website and much of their work has a Victorian copperplate feel, and we especially love the look of Le Grand Noir with its gilded sheep and typographic foil.

Having Damian Hirst – high chief of the YBAs – donate the artwork for your wine label must be something of a coup. But, as an artist who often confronts the viewer with stark images of death, Rolf Harris he ain’t. He certainly wouldn’t be top of our list to promote to chucklesome message of Comic Relief.

“The Oggau Estate is a new wine growing estate that produces 9 wines with different characters. Each wine has its own individual character with its own story and complex, changing relationships. A wine family comprising of grandparents, parents and children with intrigue, secret affairs, arguments, colourful characters and the odd black sheep. A typical family clan.”

Last year some Groggers were fortunate enough to have a jolly to the land of backward-footed people (’anti-podeans’ for you etymology fans). Whilst waiting for our connecting flight in Dubai, I was perusing a complimentary copy of Wallpaper* magazine where the Logan Weemala Pinot Gris was featured in a ‘black and white’ feature.
